Lovely big onsen at the foothills of Kyoto with nice mountain views from the pools as well as from the resting area. Very clean and wasn't busy at all when I came in January during the week and during the day. Booked it via booking.com which seem to have caused a little confusion, a lot easier to buy the ticket at the entrance. There are a lot of temples and the bamboo forest around so you may want to make a day out of it and relax in the onsen after a day of hiking and temple tracking. Otherwise, easily accessible with public transport from anywhere central Kyoto.

I was in Onsen for the first time in my life and I was delighted! I was worried for a long time whether they would let me in with a tattoo (about 8-5cm on my arm), there was also a sign at the entrance that you can't get a tattoo. But. A very nice woman who works there reassured me that you can buy a band-aid right from them for 200 yen. And they let me in. The bath itself exceeded my expectations. Women and men swim separately. There was no embarrassment, no one looked at me, everyone was busy with their relaxation. There are two hot tubs inside, one has a massage jet. The bath is hot outside and it's mini cold. And the sauna itself. Out of habit for Europeans, the water is really hot, it's hard to sit for a long time and it's unlikely to work. We spent about an hour there, changing the bathtubs in turn. If I'm still here, I'll definitely drop by again. Thank you for the experience. Also, the woman at the entrance told me that my jacket is Kawaii! I remember it with delight.

A bold and slightly daring new experience I finally decided to try — taking a dip in an onsen (Japanese hot spring)! Armed with nothing but Google Maps, I headed to the Arashiyama area by bus — my first time ever taking a bus in Japan, too. After about 45 minutes, I arrived at the final stop. Walking along the beautiful riverside — where lots of tourists were busy taking photos — I finally reached the onsen. After storing my shoes and paying the entrance fee (you can also rent a small or large towel if you didn’t bring one), I received a locker key bracelet. Then came the moment of truth — time to strip down completely and head to the public bath area. This onsen has four different pools, each with its own temperature: a hot indoor pool, a hot outdoor pool, a cold one, and one I’d call the “milky hot bath” (sorry, that’s just my nickname for it, haha). There’s also a sauna room with tiered seating so more people can fit comfortably. Before soaking in, it’s custom to rinse off first — basically, take a full shower using the soap, shampoo, and conditioner provided in the washing area. Only then can you relax and soak in whichever pool you like. Don’t worry — the hot water is perfectly tolerable! I went on a Friday afternoon, and it wasn’t crowded at all — quiet, calm, and super relaxing with no noisy groups chatting around. After about an hour there, my whole body felt instantly refreshed — all the soreness and fatigue just melted away. I could’ve fallen asleep right after, haha. What an experience. Definitely worth trying out!

Definitely amazing and exquisite experience of visiting a Japanese traditional public baths. Great opportunity to take pleasure in hot springs. No need to worry about small tattoos: you may cover them up with a plaster👌🏻 Visit can be booked on Booking and Klook. Besides, it is possible to pay your stay right on site (there are no limit or restrictions about number of guests). Man’s and Women’s baths are separate. Nevertheless, you can surely come there with kids.
